THE WAVES
Playwright + Performer
"With vivid and poetic language, striking imagery and an arresting soundscape, The Waves highlights the experience of motherhood and the mother/child relationship in ways that are unique, playful and relatable while also delving into the underrepresented territory of postpartum depression with rawness and beauty. Laura Quigley is a thoughtful writer and magnetic performer who is open to discovery in the creative process. Her vocal and physical range is unlike anyone I have witnessed in years. "
- Laura Nanni, Summerworks Artistic Director

The Waves: A Research-Creation Project on Breath, Voice, and Birth Produced, published, and presented across multiple national and international venues, The Waves has received critical recognition for its poetic integration of research and performance. The play was published in Canadian Theatre Review and through the University of Guelph, and has been performed at the Fitzmaurice Voicework® Symposium in New York City, the Festival of Original Theatre (FOOT) at the University of Toronto, Revolution They Wrote in Montreal, and at Toronto’s SummerWorks Festival. Each presentation generated interdisciplinary dialogue among scholars, artists, and healthcare practitioners, extending the project’s reach beyond traditional theatre audiences. Outcomes include new models for embodied pedagogy, refined methods for integrating somatic voicework into applied contexts, and a framework for voice-centered advocacy within reproductive health. As an evolving research-creation process, The Waves continues to inform my teaching—particularly in courses addressing voice, movement, and devised performance—and has catalyzed further writing and collaboration on feminist performance, care, and embodied knowledge.
